Curtin’s WA School of Mines (WASM) is calling for Year 12 science and mathematics students considering mining-related careers to sign up for the Focus on Mining camp from 9-13 July.

During the weeklong, all-expenses-paid camp, students will tour Curtin’s Bentley and Kalgoorlie campuses, visit operational mine sites, participate in hands-on workshops, and meet lecturers, students and mining industry leaders.

Karyn Lovatsis, WASM Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator, said the camp had been running for many years and feedback from students who had participated in past years had been overwhelmingly positive, with many going on to study and work in the mining industry.

“The support of the WA mining industry has been crucial in the success of the program and has afforded students the once in a lifetime opportunity to stay onsite in operational mines and speak with mining professionals on the job,” she said.

Participating students will visit Evolution’s Edna May Gold Project and KCGM’s Super Pit as well as Curtin University’s Kalgoorlie Campus and other mine sites in the region.

Applications for the camp close on 18 May. For more information or to apply for the camp, visit http://wasm.curtin.edu.au/future_students/focus_on_mining.cfm.
