Curtin University has appointed a leading social and health psychologist from the UK as Professor of Psychology.

Professor Martin Hagger is recognised as an international leader in the area of social and health psychology, having undertaken vital research in the field for more than a decade. His research centres around solving social problems by changing attitudes, particularly those related to health and health-related behaviour.

Before joining Curtin, Professor Hagger was a Reader and Associate Professor in social and health psychology at the University of Nottingham. He is also editor-in-chief of Health Psychology Review and Psychology of Sport and Exercise, associate editor of Stress and Health and an editorial board member of five international peer-reviewed journals.

Professor Hagger said he was excited to be joining Curtin.

“Curtin has a keen research focus with the vast majority of academic staff involved in ground-breaking research,” Professor Hagger said.

“The University’s strength in innovative health research and the potential for collaboration with other faculties, schools and institutes across Curtin’s multiple campuses is particularly attractive to me.”

Associate Professor Cori Williams, Acting Head of the School of Psychology and Speech Pathology, said the University was delighted with Professor Hagger’s appointment.

“Professor Hagger was selected from a strong field of candidates and will provide excellent academic and research leadership in the School and across the University,” she said.

Professor Hagger commenced his new role in the School of Psychology and Speech Pathology in April.
