WA School of Mines, Curtin University’s Kalgoorlie campus is hosting an open day on Wednesday 17 May, from 9:30am to noon.
The event will allow visitors to tour the campus; hear about business, education and health sciences courses on offer; and learn about flexible study options for students in the Goldfields region.
WA School of Mines Director, Professor Sam Spearing said five schools in Kalgoorlie-Boulder have been invited to attend as well as TAFE students and the general public, paving the way for students and community to connect with Curtin and plan ahead for their next stage of study.
“It’s the perfect platform for future students to get a close-up look at what career options are available, speak with our expert staff and also see for themselves how Curtin’s innovative approach to distributed learning can better support them,” Professor Spearing said.
Curtin University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Professor Jill Downie explained more courses in distributed learning mode would be available in Kalgoorlie, offering students the opportunity to connect with their classmates and experience ‘face to face’ learning, in real time.
“This year in the Goldfields, we will see more courses being delivered in a live video format, where students can attend the Kalgoorlie campus and engage in lectures and interactive tutorials as they happen at the Bentley campus,” Professor Downie said.
“This style of learning, known as distributed learning, allows students to participate in classroom discussions in an actual classroom, ask questions directly to their lecturers and engage with fellow students ‘in person’, via a live video stream.
“Online students in the Kalgoorlie region are welcome to utilise study areas, lecture theatres and the library at the Curtin Kalgoorlie campus, and distributed learning helps to bring this campus experience to the online classroom.”
Courses that will have units in distributed learning mode include:
- Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education majors)
- Bachelor of Health Sciences (Health, Safety and Environment and Health Promotion majors)
- Health Sciences Interprofessional First Year
At the Kalgoorlie campus open day, prospective students will have the opportunity to attend presentations, workshops, visit information stalls, go on campus tours, and engage with industry.
Specific individual presentations will provide more information on courses available through Open Universities Australia; Curtin Online and campus based courses, across disciplines including Health Sciences, Commerce, Education, Curtin WA School of Mines and pathways to university programs.
