Professor Jimmy Choo hoping other young designers follow in his footsteps.

Fashion icon Professor Jimmy Choo will visit Curtin University this week to present an Australian-first masterclass in shoe design, and work alongside fashion students, providing inspiration and sharing expertise to the next generation of designers.

Professor Choo previously presented masterclasses in Beijing and London. The exclusive, ticketed event at Curtin for interested members of the public and select students will take place on Thursday 9 April.

Professor Choo said during the masterclass he will outline how his passion for shoe design started, his influences and the complete shoe making process from concept to shop floor.

“I’m looking forward to sharing my background and experiences with our guests at the masterclass and hope that I might just inspire some of the young designers to pursue their goals in the fashion industry,” Professor Choo said.

“It’s a tough industry, but when you focus and follow your passion and drive, it can bring a rewarding experience.”

Professor Majella Franzmann, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Faculty of Humanities said Professor Choo toured Curtin in September last year as part of an education program for the Western Australian creative industry called Fashion Advocate.

“Having Professor Choo on the Bentley Campus presents a fabulous opportunity for our students, not only giving them access to an industry icon, but to help them achieve the best possible outcomes from their time at Curtin,” Professor Franzmann said.

“Curtin has organised Professor Choo’s visit because the University is committed to fostering strong relationships with the very best international minds.

“Professor Choo’s focus will be to encourage designers to begin their careers in the fashion industry, just as he did many years ago when at the age of 11, after drawing on inspiration from his cobbler father, he made his first pair of shoes.”

From humble beginnings, Professor Choo has scaled the heights of the fashion world with his shoes worn by the likes of Diana, Princess of Wales, Cate Blanchett and Madonna. His name is synonymous with quality and style, and his shoe devotees stretch across the globe.
