Curtin Stadium, based at Curtin University, has introduced the Leadership in Sport program designed to develop leadership skills and encourage employment opportunities for students upon graduation.

Mr David Russell, Head of Sport and Recreation at Curtin, said the experience student’s gain from completing the program helps them to develop into confident, employable graduates.

“As part of Leadership in Sport, students learn to understand their strengths and how to work to them; identify characteristics of successful teams; explore strategies to make the most of their time; learn how to make difficult decisions; and how to handle conflict effectively.”

“The collaboration between student sport, Academic Faculty and the Curtin Leadership Centre is a key component of the recently endorsed Curtin University Sport and Active Recreation strategy,” Mr Russell said.

Leadership in Sport, run out of the Bentley campus, is open to all Curtin students and is dedicated to encouraging communication, life-long learning, intercultural awareness and learning to apply professional skills in the workforce.

The program combines volunteering roles in Curtin’s sport and recreation community with leadership training modules offered through the Curtin Leadership Centre.

Students participate in a minimum of ten hours of volunteering in roles including Curtin University Sports Clubs Committee Members, Student Advisory Groups, in Sport Projects and as University Games Captains. At the same time, participants complete five leadership modules which include team work, goal setting and conflict management and reflect on their experience in the program.

Students who complete the Leadership in Sport program will be rewarded with the Curtin Extra Certificate upon graduation; an initiative that provides students with recognition and evidence of their involvement with university co-curricular programs.
