Curtin University will host the latest Bankwest Movies by Burswood outdoor cinema at its Bentley Campus.

The outdoor cinema will be located in the heart of the campus at Henderson Court and will run from Friday 7 December through to Saturday 6 April 2013.

It will be the third metropolitan location for Bankwest Movies by Burswood, which also runs cinemas at Burswood and Bassendean, with all profits donated to children’s charities.

Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jeanette Hacket said while the newest outdoor cinema venue would be operated by Bankwest Movies by Burswood, the University would be providing at least four volunteers each night, sourced entirely from the student body.

“Bankwest Movies by Burswood Curtin University will allow our staff and students to get involved in a great project that helps children with serious illnesses or physical challenges,” Professor Hacket said.

“And through volunteering one night per fortnight for the cinema season, the student volunteers will be increasing their work experience.

“Perth has the ideal climate for outdoor cinemas, but people living in the southern suburbs aren’t that well serviced for this type of experience. Bankwest Movies by Burswood Curtin University will provide an ideal venue for members of the surrounding community, as well as our staff and students, to enjoy a picnic dinner and a movie.”

Volunteers for the inaugural season were recruited through Curtin’s Careers Centre’s jobs database. Within two weeks, more than 100 students had registered to volunteer, a huge commitment given that students are not on campus during much of the four-month season. The students will attend training prior to the opening of Bankwest Movies by Burswood Curtin University, and duties on the night will include selling movie tickets, food and drinks, and hiring out bean bags.

Dr Julie Howell, Manager of Curtin Careers Centre, said she was not surprised so many students were keen to participate.

“The commitment by Curtin students highlights a strong culture of giving within the Curtin community,” Dr Howell said.

“Students will also be able to gain some useful job skills and experience.”
