Curtin University’s latest Massive Online Open Course (MOOC), titled Analytics for the Classroom Teacher, provides an introduction to the emerging field of learning and teaching analytics from the perspective of a classroom teacher.

Data-driven decision making in schools is a global trend aiming to support school autonomy and allow schools to meet both external requirements of accountability to regulatory standards, as well as internal continuous self-evaluation and improvement needs.

As a result, data literacy for teachers is now recognised as a key set of competencies to be included in both pre-service teacher education and in-service teachers’ professional development.

Professor Demetrios Sampson, from Curtin’s School of Education developed the MOOC and said the course is designed to respond to this global need by introducing educational data analytics to both in-service school teachers and university students studying education.

“Starting from the current global trend of using educational data to make data-driven, evidence-based decisions at various levels (classroom teaching, school self-evaluation, curriculum and policies revisions) and from various stakeholders, the course will focus on guiding the classroom teacher through the use of educational data analytics for improving learning and teaching,” Professor Sampson said.

“Experts from all over the world will help participants of this MOOC to get an overview of current, state-of-the-art methods and tools for learning and teaching analytics, before they take on a step-by-step online tour of how to use learning and teaching analytics tools to analyse the design and the classroom delivery of lesson plans.

“Prospective postgraduate students working in other industries who need to upskill for a new role or have a general interest in analytics for learning and teaching will also benefit from the MOOC.”

The MOOC will bring together a large community of innovative teachers from around the globe who want to be the pioneers of analytics in their school. No previous knowledge in data-driven instruction, learning and teaching analytics is required.

Analytics for the Classroom Teacher is offered in partnership with edX, a world-leading online education provider.

Founded by Harvard University and MIT in 2012, edX is an online learning destination and MOOC provider, offering high-quality courses from the world’s best universities and institutions to learners everywhere.

Curtin is the only Western Australian University in the edX consortium.

Registrations for Analytics for the Classroom Teacher are open and the course commences on 24 October, however Curtin will accept enrolments after this date.
