Joann Ang’s decision to study commerce at Curtin has taken her on a journey, both figuratively and literally, from learning how to combine her passion for business and marketing, to travelling to Singapore for an internship at Fashion Week and an exciting new role at Crown Perth.

“After finishing high school, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do but I was always interested in learning how a business functions, which made me want to study commerce. I decided to choose a major in Marketing because I really liked the marketing unit in my foundation units. I realised that marketing is a key element of operating a business.”

Joann’s favourite units in her undergraduate degree included projects where she was able to work with real clients. One of these units was Brand Management.

“This unit provided me with a snapshot of what it’s like to work in the industry by allowing me to work closely with a real client. I learned how to work to deadlines, come up with creative ideas and how to deal with rejection of ideas whilst working within strict guidelines.”

During her degree, Joann completed an internship in Singapore where she was able to indulge two of her passions – fashion and marketing. She also had the opportunity to work with some major international brands.

“I decided to take part in an internship overseas as I really wanted to know what it would be like to work in the industry. I worked for a fashion week where I was creating proposals for clients, learning how to use social media platforms to get more interactions, event planning, sponsorship requests and event management. I worked with Google+ South East Asia, Mini Cooper, Topshop and other clients.”

Joann completed an additional year of honours on top of her undergraduate degree, where she did independent research on a topic of her choosing – ‘A Conceptual Framework for Pouyannian Mimicry in Luxury Branded Products’.

After graduating with Honours in 2017, Joann started a new role at Crown Perth as a Direct Marketing Coordinator.

“This role involves supporting the team in coordinating direct marketing initiatives across multiple channels with a key focus on scheduling and mail house liaison.”

For Joann, the future looks bright.

“My goal now is to steadily progress in my career. There are a lot of things to learn so I hope to continue working within Crown. I would like to work amongst the different product marketing teams and gain more knowledge in the different areas.”
