Meredith Godley: Escaping the Self with Online Roleplay? All MySelves on YouTube and I
Posted on
Historically, online roleplay was perceived as being disconnected from the participant’s ‘real’ self, because it was multifarious and ‘disembodied’. In this iCultural age of authentic pluralism and embodied self-representation (on sites like YouTube and Facebook), does online roleplay still separate one from their sense of self? Performance artist Meredith Godley will draw from her project All MySelves on YouTube and I – in which she performs multiple non-autobiographic vlogging personae, each hosted on their own YouTube channel – to consider this question.
