As governments grapple with the policy dilemmas of a changing economic landscape, slow productivity growth, and disruptive technologies, governments are placing greater emphasis on the important role of small businesses. Indeed, the 2015 Australian Federal Budget referred to small businesses as the ‘engine room’ of the economy.
The report will examine the history of WA’s small business sector, its current contribution to the WA economy, and the future prospects for small businesses in the state in a changing industrial landscape. We will assess the impact the current regulatory environment has on the small business sector, and look at the health and wellbeing of small business owners. The report will be supported by findings from a new survey of WA’s small businesses in metropolitan and regional areas to give further insights into the opportunities and challenges faced by the sector.
