The industry supported Focus on Mining outreach program continued this year with a camp to the South West, providing prospective students greater exposure to mining activities than previous camps. Over five days, high school students toured mine sites and met lecturers, students and industry leaders, gaining hands-on experience. “Students find out what it’s really like in the industry before they start university,” said Camp Coordinator, Jay Ridgewell.

The camp travelled from Curtin’s Bentley campus to Pinjarra, Boddington, Greenbushes, Dunsborough, Collie and Huntly. Students visited Newmont, BHP Billiton Worsley, Talison and Alcoa and attended spatial science and geophysics workshops.

A new Focus on Mining program has also been launched for first year engineering students. Students will visit the Kalgoorlie campus and tour the local mining industry, in the hope that they’ll choose to study here next year.
