Curtin University has launched the Curtin Extra Certificate, an initiative that provides students with recognition and evidence of their involvement with university co-curricular programs.

The Curtin Extra Certificate is an official transcript that documents involvement in approved co-curricular programs within a variety of categories including leadership, career management, mentoring, community service, Guild clubs and societies and sports.

Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Education Associate Professor Sue Jones said the Curtin Extra Certificate would become a valuable part of a Curtin graduate’s academic record.

“The Certificate will complement a student’s academic transcript by demonstrating the extra skills sought by employers.

“Industry is telling us that while they are very happy with the calibre our graduates, they are also looking for graduates who can demonstrate exceptional skills in leadership, team building, enhanced communication, conflict resolution and negotiation,” Associate Professor Jones said.

“The Curtin Extra Certificate acknowledges the broad range of engagement undertaken by students outside the scope of their degree. It is a sign to employers that they have a potential employee who is well-rounded, proactive and experienced.”

In 2013, more than 5,000 students participated in Curtin Leadership Centre’s voluntary leadership development opportunities and Curtin Volunteers! recorded more than 12,406 hours of volunteering work.

Associate Professor Jones said more than 12,500 students already take part in industry placements each year as part of their curriculum and Curtin intends to double this number in the next 12 months.

As part of the University’s strategic Learning for Tomorrow plan, leadership development will be incorporated into all Curtin courses, in addition to the co-curricular programs available to students.
