Curtin leading lights nominated for 2009 AFI Awards

Outstanding Curtin University of Technology graduate Frances O’Connor has been nominated for an Australian Film Industry (AFI) Award to be announced next month.

Ms O’Connor, who graduated from Curtin in the 1980s with a Bachelor of Arts (English Literature) and a minor in Theatre Arts, has been nominated for Best Lead Actress for Blessed.

She has played lead roles in films in Australia, Europe and the US including Mansfield Park and Bedazzled, and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her performance in the BBC’s Madame Bovary.

Film and TV graduate Sarah Shaw, and Corrie Jones who studied at Curtin have been nominated for Best Short Fiction Film for Water.

Water was produced by Ms Shaw, and directed and co-written by Mr Jones – they met while studying at Curtin.

Filmed on location in Gracetown, WA, Water follows eight-year-old Toby as he grapples with the responsibility of caring for his mentally disabled father.
