Professor Phillip Della, Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery at Curtin University, has been appointed as a Board Member of the Australian Commission of Safety and Quality in Healthcare (ACSQHC).

Professor Della said it was a great honour and privilege to be appointed to the ACSQHC Board – a government agency which was established by the Commonwealth, with the support of State and Territory governments.

“I’m looking forward to working with the other Board Members over the next four years to lead and coordinate national improvements in safety and quality in healthcare across Australia,” Professor Della said.

Professor Della was one of nine other members appointed by Minister for Health Tanya Plibersek.

Professor Della is currently the Chairperson of the Western Australian Health Safety and Quality Council. This position builds on a long track record and involvement in patient quality and safety including managing the Quality and Customer Service Unit at Royal Perth Hospital.

In his previous role as Chief Nursing Officer of Western Australia, he led the strategic development of the nursing and midwifery workforce including the development of new roles, scope of practice and introducing new models of care.

In this position he was also responsible for introducing nurse practitioner legalisation, regulation and education. He has continued to work in this area of research and policy development since his appointment at Curtin in 2008, and continues to work with the Department of Health (WA) in the areas of patient safety and quality and health workforce.
