A Curtin University law student has been named the Law Student of the Year at the 2019 Women in Law Awards, which celebrate outstanding women in the legal profession.

Meika Atkins, who is studying a Bachelor of Law and Arts at Curtin, was recognised at the awards ceremony organised by Lawyers Weekly, which recognise the leading women who have played a role in shaping and influencing the Australian legal industry.

Curtin Law School Dean Professor Robert Cunningham congratulated Ms Atkins on being recognised at the annual awards.

“The national awards acknowledge the achievements of women in the legal industry, as well as students on the cusp of commencing their legal careers,” Professor Cunningham said.

“It is fantastic to see Curtin students being recognised by their peers on the national stage, making a significant impact before they have finished their university studies. I would like to formally congratulate Ms Atkins on her award and wish her all the best for her future studies at Curtin, as well as in her future career.”

Ms Atkins said she was thrilled to be recognised among her peers in the Australian legal industry.

“Given the high calibre of law students across Australia, winning the title of Law Student of the Year feels surreal. It reinforces to myself, and others, that dedicating your life to something you are truly passionate about, and giving it your all, can make a sincere, impactful difference in the world,” Ms Atkins said.

“Although it is lovely to be recognised on an individual level, I have been very fortunate to have some incredible mentors and people in my life, who have pushed and supported me in every way possible. This award really was a collective effort and I am so grateful to everyone who made it possible.”

The awards recognise women individually and in large and boutique firms across more than 30 categories, including executives, barristers, academics, pro bono, students and other legal professionals.
