Curtin to manage GAC into 2012

Media release

Curtin University will maintain responsibility for the Goldfields Arts Centre (GAC) until the conclusion of the Diggers and Dealers Forum in 2012.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jeanette Hacket, said she was optimistic new management would be finalised before the Forum, but had made this commitment in response to negotiations with the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder over the ongoing management of the facility.

“We recognise that the outcome of the Royalties for Regions funding application and other matters relating to State Government funding may not all be finalised this year,” Professor Hacket said.

“Curtin has made this decision to allay community concerns and to allow time to resolve outstanding issues and ensure the ongoing viability of the facility.”

The Department of Training and Workplace Development has agreed to continue managing the GAC on Curtin’s behalf for this period.

A comprehensive funding application for the Centre has been submitted by the Department of Training and Workforce Development under the Regional Development Council’s Regional Development Policy Framework: An Action Agenda for Regional Development.

If successful, it will transform the Goldfields Arts Centre into an iconic regional entertainment centre that responds to the cultural needs of the communities in the Goldfields Esperance region.
