Curtin University is applauding the announcement of $7.5 million over three years for the establishment of a Minerals Research Institute in WA.

Announced by Mines and Petroleum Minister Norman Moore on Wednesday May 16 as part of the State Government’s 2012-13 Budget, the Institute will support research focussed on developing new exploration and processing technologies.

According to Curtin’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Development Professor Graeme Wright, funding is the fruition of a long-pursued idea that brings Government, researchers and industry together for the good of Western Australia.

“This stands to benefit the State directly through its mineral endowment as well as indirectly by enhancing the education and knowledge economies,” Professor Wright said.

“It builds on the strong work of the Minerals and Energy Research Institute of Western Australia and provides a greatly enhanced focal point for minerals research in our State.

“Minister Moore’s support in developing the business case for this endeavour and promoting it through Government, especially in light of a difficult budget, is greatly appreciated.

“Our congratulations and thanks go to him for his commitment to the minerals industry.”

According to Mr Mark Woffenden, Executive Director of Curtin’s Resources & Chemistry Precinct, the Institute gives minerals a research foundation in line with the petroleum industry’s Western Australian Energy Research Alliance, of which the University is a key member.

“Overall, the Government’s initiative will provide the framework for strategic research and development and innovation targeted at addressing current and future knowledge needs of the WA minerals industry,” Mr Woffenden said.
