A national competition to identify the best new mobile application concept in Australia has been announced for 2012.

Following on from the highly successful 2011 WApp Awards, the new oZAPP Awards aims to foster dialogue and collaboration between innovators, researchers, investors and industry, and to further stimulate innovative business culture in Western Australia and beyond.

Curtin Director of IP Commercialisation, Rohan McDougall, said the success of last year’s WApp Awards meant that there was now significant momentum and interest to take the awards to a national audience.

“Last year’s judges were extremely impressed with the quality of applicants for the WApp Awards, with many commenting that the calibre of entries highlighted the quality of innovation coming out of Western Australia,” Mr McDougall said.

“Hosting the oZAPP Awards in Perth will provide the opportunity for us to draw an audience of the world’s leading investors and entrepreneurs to our city, including a host of Silicon Valley venture capitalists and business leaders specialising in the technology and innovation sectors.”

Mr McDougall also said winners of the Awards would attract significant resources to build and launch their apps.

The oZAPP Awards will also include a forum for interaction between applicants, finalists, entrepreneurs, investors and other participants in the innovation space.  Likely to be held as part of the final judging process in February 2013 in Perth, there will opportunities for applicants to develop their business concepts and pitch with input from experienced entrepreneurs and investors.

Applications for the awards will open on 1 August 2012. More details of the full event program will become available shortly.
