Curtin University has teamed up with Australia’s marketing communications peak body, The Communications Council, to further bridge the gap between study and career for advertising students.

The move sees Curtin’s School of Marketing become the Inaugural Premier Member of the Communications Council Education Network, a new approach for university and industry cooperation.

Associate Professor Sonia Dickinson, from the School of Marketing, Curtin Business School, said the relationship with The Communications Council was an exceptional opportunity for students and would help ensure they were job-ready when they graduated.

“Our relationship with The Communications Council will enable our students to gain industry knowledge and contacts throughout their course, benefiting students in all years and levels of study,” Ms Dickinson said.

“This initiative will also ensure Curtin’s curriculum reflects the rapidly changing communications landscape it operates in, creating rich and compelling learning experiences for advertising students and equipping them with valuable industry knowledge.”

The Communications Council will share industry trends and topics through presentations, workshops and talks to students and provide advice on the courses offered and graduate attributes required by industry employers.  Curtin staff and students will also be able to attend The Communications Council networking events.

Margaret Zabel, CEO of The Communications Council said the relationship was an important step towards training tomorrow’s practitioners, equipping them with knowledge and lining up contacts to make a strong start in the industry.

“This initiative complements other services we offer that provide career paths into the industry. Our organisation’s WA branch is pioneering this education model which we hope to roll out across Australia from late 2013 if it’s a success,” Ms Zabel said.
