Six Pilbara based students have been awarded BHP Billiton Iron Ore Scholarships to assist them with their studies at Curtin University of Technology’s Centre for Regional Education in Port Hedland.

Professor the Hon Stephen Martin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Strategy and Planning, Curtin University of Technology in conjunction with Ms Belinda Fox from BHP Billiton Iron Ore and Ms Allyson Grant from the Pilbara Development Commission presented the recipients with BHP Billiton Iron Ore Scholarships at Thursday’s ceremony at the campus.

In congratulating the students, Professor Martin expressed a desire to see the alliance between all three entities continue to be built, and for the Pilbara students to benefit.

“The collaborative force of the BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Pilbara Development Commission and Curtin alliance has provided scholarships annually since 2005 to students enrolled at Curtin’s Centre for Regional Education in Port Hedland,” Professor Martin said.

“In 2008, we are able to award six worthy students and recognise their commitment and achievements.

“BHP Billiton Iron Ore and the Pilbara Development Commission are to be commended on their efforts to attract Pilbara residents to take up the offer of a BHP Billiton Iron Ore Scholarship.”

BHP Billiton Iron Ore provide funding support through the Pilbara Education Partnership and the Pilbara Development Commission match these funds through the Pilbara Fund to provide scholarships to students in the region to undertake higher education courses at Curtin University’s Centre for Regional Education at the Pilbara TAFE facility in South Hedland.

The project aspires to deliver real opportunities for a diverse range of Pilbara residents, including school leavers, adults and the Indigenous population.

The six scholarship recipients are Tara Maxwell, Christopher Annal, Tanya Kramer, Robert Abdel-Messih, Rebekah Poole and Carly Saville.

2008 is the fourth year these scholarships have been offered.
