Curtin University’s new Engineering Pavilion has officially been opened by the Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard.

The Engineering Pavilion forms stage one of the $32.5 million Curtin Engineering Pavilion Complex, with stage two due for completion in 2012.

Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jeanette Hacket said the University had committed to the creation of a world-class centre for undergraduate education and research in engineering, which featured technologically advanced learning facilities.

“Our graduates comprise some of industry’s best-educated professionals, both in Australia and in locations across the globe, so it is essential that we provide students with a stimulating, world-class learning environment,” Professor Hacket said.

“By bringing together industry representatives, educators, researchers and students, the Pavilion will create a link between WA’s engineering community and Curtin, and help to foster innovation and collaboration.”

Professor Hacket said Curtin was very grateful to the Australian Government, which contributed $20.5 million in funding from the Education Investment Fund in the Federal Budget in 2009.

In addition, corporate sponsors Clough, KBR, Lycopodium, Monadelphous, Rio Tinto, Thiess, Verve Energy, WesTrac and Woodside had generously provided a further $2 million.

“The support of the Government and our corporate sponsors, on top of Curtin’s $10 million investment, has allowed the vision for the Engineering Pavilion Complex to become a reality,” she said.

Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations, Senator Chris Evans also attended the opening.

The Curtin Engineering Pavilion has been submitted for a 5 Star Green Star Rating, based on its innovative environmental design and technologies, which have also been developed as hands-on learning tools for Curtin’s engineering students.

Stage two of the Curtin Engineering Pavilion Complex will consist of an additional four-level Learning Centre adjacent and linked to the Pavilion. It will provide world-class research and teaching accommodation and provide a gateway for the Faculty of Engineering.
