Curtin graduates take out top journalism awards

News story

On Wednesday night, Curtin graduates Jake Sturmer and Anthony DeCeglie won major awards at the 2012 Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year Ceremony in Sydney.

Jake was named the 2012 Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year and also won the television category for his investigation into systemic sexual abuse at the government-run Katanning Hostel.

Anthony won the print category for his story Karl in Fire Fallout; a story that detailed how WA Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan was watching the cricket as the Perth Hills burned.

Both Jake and Anthony graduated from Curtin in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts (Journalism). During his studies, Jake volunteered as a newsreader with Curtin FM.

As 2012 winner, Jake has won a three-week trip to BBC newsrooms in London and CNN in Atlanta.

Jake and Anthony join a long list of Curtin staff and graduates who have been recognised by the Walkley Foundation, including Curtin journalism lecturer Bonita Mason (Walkley Award in the Best Magazine Feature, 1997).
