Governor becomes patron of sustainable development

News story

The Governor of Western Australia, His Excellency Dr Ken Michael AC, has agreed to become the inaugural patron of Curtin University of Technology’s Australian Sustainable Development Institute (ASDI).

His Excellency is a former engineer with a long list of Professional achievements, including a PhD from the University of London and a former Chancellor of The University of Western Australia.  The Governor has a keen interest in science and sustainability and has initiated a series of Science Forums at Government House exploring issues that relate to these areas.

Curtin Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jeanette Hacket, welcomed the Governor’s appointment and ongoing support.

“The Governor has been a strong supporter of Curtin’s sustainable development initiatives and officially launched the Institute in April this year”, she said.

“I welcome his support for the University in the promotion of innovative solutions for future sustainable development.”

In launching ASDI, the Governor recognised the importance of the capabilities that it brought together.

“This is a very exciting initiative,” he said.

“It reinforces and supports Curtin University of Technology’s position as a leader in sustainable development research and education in Western Australia.

“ASDI will be a great resource in that it will develop and nurture high quality research on this vital issue of sustainable development.”

ASDI incorporates 16 existing research centres and institutes based at Curtin, including the high profile Curtin University Sustainable Policy Institute (CUSP).

Its goals include attracting and retaining internationally recognised researchers to provide strong leadership and significant contributions to research which advances sustainable development.

The institute also facilitates the development of new research projects which support specific industry and government initiatives, increasing their viability by working to gain government and industry funding for sustainable development research.
