How to stay happy and healthy during isolation

In this strange and unprecedented time, it’s more important than ever to focus on staying happy and healthy. Although you may be spending more time at home, this doesn’t mean your entire routine needs to go out the window!  Here are seven ways to stay healthy and happy during isolation.

  1. Stay connected!

You may not be able to see your friends and family in person but that doesn’t mean you can’t catch up. Being social is also great for general well-being. Scheduling a phone call, messaging a friend or organising a group video chat with loved ones can be an amazing way to stay connected. These virtual meetups are a great way for all parties to feel less isolated.

  1. Create a routine

Whether you’re now studying online or working from home, your normal routine has probably fallen to the wayside so it’s time to establish a new one. Some ideas include setting a daily morning alarm, writing down your goals for the day and having your meals at the same time every day. Having a routine can help relieve stress and anxiety as it allows you to take control of your situation and maintain a sense of normality.

  1. Sleep

Make sure you also schedule sleep into your routine! Going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning can help improve your quality of sleep. Being in isolation can also mean you’re more susceptible to napping throughout the day; having a solid sleep routine can help minimise this and keep your body clock regulated.

  1. Do the things you enjoy

Being isolated can mean a lot of new free time for a lot of us. Although you might not be able to do all of your favourite things in this current situation, try and think of activities you enjoy that you can also do while isolated. Re-read your favourite books, play video games, watch that new series on Netflix, have a movie marathon, kick a ball around your backyard, practice your soccer skills, learn a new recipe…the possibilities are endless! Making time to do the things you enjoy is a great way to stay positive during isolation.

  1. Exercise

Keeping active during isolation is very important for staying happy and healthy. If you’re not sure where to start there are plenty of at home, equipment free routines on YouTube and apps that provide you with daily circuits to complete. Curtin Stadium is also helping students keep fit at home through their Facebook group “Home Workouts, Exercises and Inspiration For All” where they are providing video workout routines, broadcasts of group fitness classes, fitness factsheets, exercise demonstrations and more!

  1. Exercise your brain

It can be super easy to fall down the streaming rabbit hole during isolation, but make sure you’re also keeping your brain fit! Activities such as Sudoku, crosswords, word finds, brain teasers and card games can be a fun way to keep mentally active. Don’t worry if you don’t already have these at home, a quick search online will provide you with plenty of free templates and games.

  1. Visit a museum or art gallery (virtually!)

Many museums and art galleries around the world such as the British Museum in London and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC are currently offering free online virtual exhibits and experiences. This is great way to learn, ‘escape’ the day to day and have a new experience!

Isolation is a new experience for most of us but it’s important to stay enthused! Try and make the most of your time inside it by implementing these seven ways to stay happy and healthy.
